Alberta Adobe Master Teachers

In 2014, there is no shortage of great technology tools available for teachers and students (Microsoft, Google and Apple for example). The Alberta Adobe Master Teachers group, representing many jurisdictions across the province, is working to make the most of one of those technology suites. Alberta Education and Adobe have made an agreement to put Adobe software in schools from May 2012 to May 2015.  The agreement offers several configurations but most schools have put the Digital School Collection into K-6 environments and the CS6 / Creative Cloud Master Collection in 7-12 grades. With this arrangement comes take-home rights for teachers, which has generated more interest in how best to teach (and learn) with these Adobe products.

In May 2012, 35 Alberta teachers who use Adobe Creative Suite products joined forces in a community of practice professional learning model, allowing the group to meet online to share classroom success stories, division-wide technology plans and professional learning activities.

Based on Inspiring Education and the Ministerial Order, the AAMT group has three objectives:
  1. to increase technical competency in the use of digital media tools;
  2. to improve pedagogical practice in alignment with the Ministerial Order on Student Learning; and
  3. to support colleagues in the effective use of digital media tools.

In the autumn of 2013, 25 more teachers joined, bringing the group to 60. The group meets bi-weekly in an online venue to share ongoing projects, to discuss pedagogy and technique, and to plan professional learning activities. In addition, the group meets in person three times per year. Past meetings have included Adobe-sponsored guest speakers who have provided training on specific Adobe products such as InDesign, Acrobat, and Photoshop. When the group met in May, they used a Carousel Professional Development model in which the group provided its own learning, utilizing the expertise of its members. The group is meeting again in August to learn more about certification options for themselves and their students.
